Children's Eye Health

Prevent Blindness America recommends a continuum of eye care for children to include both vision screening and comprehensive eye examinations.

Cosmetic Contact Lenses

There are increasing reports of the dispensing of cosmetic contact lenses, without an appropriate prescription, by non eye-care professionals such as boutiques, beach shops, tattoo parlors, and other nonprofessional commercial vendors.

Fireworks

Prevent Blindness America supports the development and enforcement of bans on the importation, sale and use of all fireworks and sparklers, except those used in authorized public displays by competent licensed operators, as the only effective means of eliminating the social and economic impact of fireworks-related trauma and damage.

Model State School-Entry Vision Screening Legislation

Among Prevent Blindness America’s core visionary goals is the reduction of vision loss by ensuring all children receive appropriate vision care before entering school.  Toward this end, Prevent Blindness America supports legislation in every state that would ensure all children are screened for vision problems, with appropriate follow-up eye examinations when necessary, prior to school entry.

Refractive Surgery

Refractive surgery offers millions of eyeglass and contact lens wearers new alternatives for improving their vision. While most of these people are accustomed to the benefits of eyeglasses or contact lenses, few understand the technology, benefits and risks associated with refractive surgery.

UV Hazards Policy

There is presently no uniform labeling of sunglasses that provides adequate information about UV protection to the consumer. Labels should be examined carefully to insure that the lenses purchased absorb 99-100% of both UV-A and UV-B. Consumers are advised to be wary of claims that sunglasses “block harmful UV” without providing the degree of protection in percent of UV-A and UV-B.
